Banned Books Week! October 4-10

“There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.” — Joseph Brodsky

Books give us the opportunity to see the world through perspectives and experiences different from our own. When stories are banned or challenged, important voices and histories can be pushed aside. Banned Books Week reminds us why protecting access to diverse stories matters and encourages us to read books that challenge, educate, and inspire us. Take this opportunity to explore these stories through selections from the GoodShelf catalog:

A Little Piece of Ground: Written by Elizabeth Laird, one of Great Britain’s best-known young adult authors, A Little Piece Of Ground explores the human cost of the occupation of Palestinian lands through the eyes of a young boy.

Homeland: My Father Dreams of Palestine: An autobiographical children's picture book written by Hannah Moushabeck and illustrated by Reem Madooh. At bedtime, three young girls wait for their father to return home. When he does, he shares vibrant, nostalgic memories of his childhood and family in Palestine.

The Arabic Quilt: An Immigrant Story: a children's picture book written by Aya Khalil and illustrated by Anait Semirdzhyan which is about a young Egyptian-American girl named Kanzi who finds acceptance and pride in her heritage at a new school.
